Membership Meeting

President Anne Harrison Harris called the meeting to order.

 

The roll was called by Secretary, Ellen Jones.

 

Minutes from the March meeting were approved as corrected.   Ticket cost for “Flowers after Hours” should be $15.00 for non-members and $10.00 for members and their spouses.

 

OFFICERS’ REPORTS:

 

PRESIDENT: Anne Harrison Harris thanked all who helped Huntington Garden Club with the Daffodil Show. She reminded the club of several dates to remember:

  • “Art & Garden” in Colonial Williamsburg, May 5 and 6, 2017
  • Peninsula Council of Garden Clubs Installation of Officers Luncheon May 12, 2017
  • GCV Horticulture Field Day May 31 – June 1 Gloucester
  • The opportunity to submit an article to the GCV Journal

 

Treasurer:

Catherine Kelley reported that the balance is $30,736.40.

 

Standing Committee Reports:

 

Historic Garden Week: Mary Johnson gave us an update on Historic Garden Week 2017 that all plans are going according to schedule. She informed the membership that they would be receiving any email from Tricia Russell, Chairman for 2017 with all of the details. Mary asked our members to promote the speakers and vendors on the day of the tour.

Anne Hart and Milly Wassum handed out the Hostess assignments. Amine Morgan reminded everyone of their duties on arranging day and please put your name on your container.  Reservations are needed for lunch at the PFAC. Lunch will be served from 11:00 – 2:00.   Buses will shuttle everyone from the PFAC parking lot. Nan Lee Smith has offered to let hostesses park in her field. Hostesses are encouraged to carpool. Mary went over the ticket information. She reminded hostesses that visitors are not allowed to take photographs in the homes. Publicity continues on social media. There will be an article in the Daily Press promoting the tour. Refreshments are being served in G.G. Buxton’s garden.

 

Community Project Development: Sidney Jordan presented a proposal; Fort Monroe has requested funds to landscape a bed at the entrance of Fort Monroe. The Executive Board has approved $7.500 for the planting of 46 Knock-out roses and 17 Nellie Stevens hollies. Anne Hart made a motion for Hampton Roads Garden Club to accept this project and Milly Wassum 2nd the motion. The membership voted unanimously.

 

Exhibits/flower Shows: Nancy Horgan/Joann Prillaman

Nancy recognized the Daffodil Flower team for winning a Blue Ribbon for the arrangement that was entered in the Daffodil Show.

Frankye McAdam, Lily Show Chair, named the members on the committee for Lily Show in July.

 

Nature Camper:

In Jennifer Dick’s absence Anne Harrison read her report.   Bradley Garner has been accepted to Nature Camp. We have paid the tuition. He is a 7th grader and will be going July 16 – 29th. He is the son of Karen and Jim Gardner. Jim passed away last year of Alzheimer’s.

Our 2nd camper is Emmeline Batcha, she is currently number 2 on the waiting list for the June 18 – July 1 session. We have paid her deposit, but they are holding it until it is determined if she is accepted. She is currently in 9th grade and is the daughter of Jennifer and Jason Batcha who live in the Riverside area. She was a referral from our member, Joanna Bigley.

 

Peninsula Council of Garden Clubs: Liz Umstott/Jan Mattern

Liz reported that the luncheon for the PCGC was a huge success and thanked those who helped.

 

Daffodil Collection: Kim Cross passed an order sheet around and encouraged those who were interested to order the collection. They will be delivered in the time for fall planting.

 

Programs: Dale Banning shared with us that the May Annual Meeting/Luncheon will be Tuesday, May 23rd at 11:00 at the Mariners’ Museum. Hostesses for the luncheon are Dale Banning, Amine Morgan, Susan Armfield and Roseanne Daniels.

 

Ways and Means

            Club Event: Donna Herbert/Melissa Saunders

            Donna reminded the membership of the Food and Drink drop off dates. The Itinerary for the trip will be emailed to those who going on the trip.

 

Anne Harrison thanked our hostesses for today, Anne Sweetman and Catherine Kelley.
